Novices to contest at squash Nationals
Novices events for men and women have been included in the 30th National Squash Championship this year to recognize the efforts taken by every squash player to improve standards in the game.
The Championship will be held at the Gymkhana Club Squash Courts Maitland Crescent from December 18 to 23.
The event will also bring to an end the squash calendar for the year and all leading players are expected to participate. The Championship is also sponsored for the 8th consecutive year by Finlay’s Rentokil.
The Championship will also run the Juvenile Championship concurrently for those in the age categories of under-9, 11, 13 and 15. The Nationals will hold six events in the form of Men’s and Women’s Open, Masters over 45, Intermediate over 35 and the novices event for men and women.
Entries will be accepted only at the SLSF Secretariat, Tamil Union Club, up to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, December 14. The draw will be held at 6 p.m. on December 15 at the Gymkhana Club.
Director of Finlay Rentokil, Thushara Agus who was present said that they were proud to partner the SLSF at the 30th Senior Nationals, a sport they have associated with for the 8th consecutive year.
Five times champion Navin Samarasinghe, who won in 2009 is expected to defend his title but will have to battle it out with the junior and up and coming players in the calibre of Gihan Suwaris and Binura Jayasuriya. Former national champion, Saman Tillekeratne has announced his intentions to take part at this year’s championships and is hoping to return in time from France where he is domiciled.
In the women’s category defending champion Nirasha Guruge, who has won the national title for six years will have to fight it out with players like Damindi Udangawe, Sharya Guruge and Nadindi Udangawe.
