Army, Saunders score easy wins
Army scored an easy 3 -1 win over Blue Star in a Dialog Champions League first round match played at CR & FC grounds on Sunday. Army were given a torrid time in the first half of the game as Blue Star went into the lead with a perfect goal from the boot of evergreen A. W. M. Farzeen. He netted the ball in the 28th minute of the game and at the end of first half, Blue Star was leading 1-0.
After the break, the game completely changed and the soldiers started to dominate. After one hours of play, M.N.M. Fazal equalized from a close range. Things went worse for the team from Kalutara as Army snapped up two goals within four minutes. First it was R. K. Gunasinghe and in the 74th minute M. N. M. Izzadeen scored the third goal.
In the other match played at City League grounds, Saunders beat their arch rivals by Ratnam 3 goals to nil. The match was a tense affair as the referee A. Basanayake had to send off one player each from both sides. Instead of going for the ball, players from both teams were going at each other. Due to this three from Saunders and two from Ratnam received the yellow cards.
The third match saw the Air Force managed to settle for a one all draw against Don Bosco. The match was played in Negombo. Nipuna scored for Don Bosco and Kumara Fernando made one successful kick for the Airmen.
