Wijekoon, Samanmalee set new meet records

Sri Lanka's number one middle distance runner Chaminda Wijekoon and Shanika Samanmalee set new meet records on the third and final day of the National Sports Festival of 2011, concluded at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Diyagama on Saturday.

Wijekoon, representing Uva Province, clocked 3 minutes, 44.16 seconds in the 1500 men's event erasing his own mark of 3:46.77 set five years ago.

Shanika Samanmalee of North Western Province clocked 4 minutes, 25.06 seconds in the 1500 meters, women's event. The previous record of 4:29.08 was belonged to N. M. C. Dilrukshi of North Western Province.

Western Province once again clinched the President's Trophy by grabbing 81 gold medals in the festival, held for the 37thtime. High Jumper Manjula Kumara and Chandrika Subashini were adjudged best athletes of the year 2011.
