Renown enters Phoenix Cup final
Renown entered the final of the Phoenix Cup with a hard fought two-nil win over New Youngs in the first semi-final played at the City Football Complex on Sunday.
New Youngs fielding an under 17 player as their goal-keeper did well to contend the favourites Renown.
Renown opened scoring early in the 12th minute through Dilan de Silva off a rebound.
The lads from Wennappuwa fought hard and tried their best to find the equaliser but the forwards were off target on numerous occasions.
Meanwhile Renown players too missed several chances due to their over enthusiasm.
After the short break New Youngs played a better game and gave Renown some anxious moments.
Renown wasted many chances owing to selfish display especially M. Rafeek who missed four chances including two sitters.
However in the 75th minute Renown increased the lead as M. Nafeer tapped the ball into the open net after a defender's kick had rebounded while the goal keeper was still on the ground.
The second semi-final between defending champions Ratnam and Saunders will be played at the same venue on Wednesday.
The winner of the second semi-final will meet Renown in the final scheduled to be played on Saturday December 10.
