Samarasinghe wins Squash national crown for seventh time

At the 31st National Squash Championships Navin Samarasinghe retained his National Squash Title. This is the seventh time he has won the Championship Title. Sharya Guruge clinched women's Title for the first time at the Grand Finale.

Navin overcame aggression shown by the seventeenth time holder Saman Tillekeratne in this Championship meet, winning the last three games in a thrilling five setter. Guruge also sustained stiff resistance shown by current Junior Champion Nadindi Udangawa..

The Championship was held at the Sri Lanka Air Force Squash Complex, Ratmalana, on Thursday the 22nd December 2011. The Chief Guest of the Championships Awarding ceremony, was the Secretary to the Ministry of Sports Udaya Seneviratne.

The Championships was witnessed by a distinguished gathering, including Past Presidents and National Champions.

The President of the Sri Lanka Squash Federation Commodore Palitha Weerasinghe said that squash would betaken to rural areas in the future and a start would be taken in the coming New Year 2012. His committee kept squash players busy during the last three, four months and the finalists showed the competitiveness to vie for the supremacy while showing superlative squash in this showpiece event. He reiterated the need of many productive steps next year to take squash to rural areas and thank the Sports Ministry for guidance given.
