A three day judo training program for lower grade judoka conducted by the Western Province Judo Association and coordinated by the Western Province Sports Council (WPSC) was successfully completed recently at the Sugathadasa Stadium recently.

The programme was conducted under the leadership of Sarath Kasthuriarachchi who is a skilled judoka and international referee. According to an official around 90 young aspirant judokas, both boys and girls, registered for the program of which 65 per cent were beginners.

A series of lectures coupled with practical training aspects ended with an unofficial competition on the final day. The interest shown and the high standard displayed during the three days of training was ample evidence to confirm the success of the program.

Apart from the training for the judokas the opportunity was taken to conduct training for tournament officials such as referees, time keepers, head table personal etc. As a follow up to this program the WPSC is looking forward to conduct competitions on the last Saturday of every month.

This is being done with the aim of ranking the players in order to facilitate selection for national tournaments and also to encourage and motivate the young judokas who have shown immense interest.
