Sidath Wettimuny prevails at Rajawella

Former Sri Lanka test cricketer and national cricket selector Sidath Wettimuny won the Donald Steel Golf Championship 2011/ 2012 organized for the 14th time by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and worked off at the beautiful Victoria golf course at Rajawella off Kandy.

This was Sidath Wettimuny’s second title win at this prestigious championship having earlier won it in the year 2008. Wettimuny scored 31 gross and he was closely followed by three times winner Ian Tait with 30 gross and Sidath’s win prevented the Englishman from winning the trophy for the fourth successive time. In third place was Sidath’s younger brother Nimal with 28 gross.that versatile golfer Suwaneetha Selvaratnam lifted the Pam Fernando trophy with a gross score of 26 but she met with very strong opposition from another top golfer in Niloo Jayatillake who also registered 26 gross. This deadlock was broken with a count back on the last nine holes and Suwen Selvaratnam edged out Niloo Jayatillake by the narrowest of margins having scored 9:15 against 9:14 by her opponent. Niloo Jayatillake had to be satisfied with the runner up berth. Suwen Selvaratnam has now won the Pam Fernando Trophy six times while Niloo Jayatillake is not far behind with four title wins. In third place was English lady Jennie Nalder with 13 gross.

English Lady Pauline Morley was successful in winning the Victoria Bowl awarded to the lady golfer with the best net score when she registered a net total of 38. This was the fourth time that she has won this title. Finishing runner up was Fran de Mel with 31 net. Indira Tibblin ended up second runner up with 25 net.
