‘Sevens’ heralds schools rugby
The Under 19 inter-schools rugby season will kick-off with the All Island Seven-a-side rugby tournament scheduled to be worked off today and tomorrow at the Royal Sports Complex ground in Reid Avenue.
Two teams St. Thomas College Matale and Dharmapala College Pannipitiya who were promoted to the top division will be making their debut in the top division by virtue of being champion and runner-up in the Division two category last year.
Twenty six teams will be in the fray and the teams have been divided into eight groups. Last year’s champion St. Peter’s is in Group ‘A’ while the runners-up Kingswood is in Group ‘H’.
The eight top teams of each group will qualify to compete in the Cup championship and the losers will battle it out in the Plate championship. The second placed teams will confront in the Bowl championship while third placed teams will contest for the Shield title.
St. Peter’s, Lumbini MV, Ananda. ‘B’ – Isipathana, Mahanama, St. Anne’s Kurunegala. ‘C’ – St. Anthony’s K’tota, Dharmaraja, Maliyadeva. ‘D’ – St. Joseph’s, Vidyartha, St. John’s Nugegoda, St. Thomas Matale. ‘E’ – Royal, St. Sylvester’s, Nalanda, Dharmapala. ‘F’ – Trinity, Wesley, Zahira. ‘G’ – Science College, S. Thomas’, Royal Panadura. ‘H’ – Kingswood, Thurstan, Prince of Wales.
