The annual cricket encounter between Kalutara Vidyalaya and Tissa Central College, popularly known as the ‘Battle of the Mangoosteens,’ will take place today and tomorrow for the 54th time.
This encounter between the two colleges of Kalutara began in 1949.
The Kalutara Vidyalaya team which won the game last year is determined to win it this year as well. Led by Dharsana Manatunga with Isuru Buddhika as the deputy they have gained quite a lot of experience this season having played against Zahira and Nalanda Colombo, Dharmasoka Ambalangoda, Dharmaraja and Trinity Kandy, Mahinda Galle, St. Servatius Matara and Sri Sumangala Panadura.
Four players from the Under 13 A group who were the runners up position at the All Island competitions are also included in the Kalutara Vidyalaya team.
The batting line is also experienced with several experienced run getters.
The bowling department is also very strong, thus posing a formidable task to the opponents.isuru Buddhika as the wicketkeeper contributed to the win against Servatius College this season.
The team owes its credit to the Principal, Ratnaweera Perera, Master-in-charge of cricket Upul Kumara, and coaches Sunil Saluwadana and Rumesh Milroy.
The Kalutara Tissa Central College under 19 team has played this season against S De S Jayasinghe Central Dehiwala, Matara Sri Rahula Vidyalaya, Kandy Vidyartha Vidyalaya, Carey College Colombo, St. Anne’s College Kurunegala, Moratuwa Central College, Ambalangoda Devananda College and S. Thomas’ College Kotte.
The team is led by Supun Dilshan, an outstanding bowler who is also a good bat and fielder. He has excelled in Lemonade Trophy encounters, and has reached the 500 run mark. W. Sunil Jayasiri is the Master-in-charge of cricket and the coach is Palitha Alwis.
