Lanka gets ready for SAG in Delhi
A co ordinating office was declared open by the Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage in Colombo. This is done as part of preparations to face the forthcoming 12th South Asian Games to be held in New Delhi, India in February 2013.
The Minister speaking on the occasion said that Sri Lanka will field competitors for 23 disciplines. He further added that Sri Lanka has failed miserably during the past few years in international sports due to various reasons.
He cited the following as faults for the failures – short term training for the poolists, selections made according to whims and fancies of selectors and the selection of physically unfit competitors.
Though these mishaps were in existence the Ministry of Sports has taken measures to give all necessary support to the participants who are expected to compete at the Games in February. He added that with all the facilities extended to the players of all sports Sri Lanka will be able to pose a big challenge to the Asian giant India and bag the second slot in the medals tally.
The Ministry has appointed Rear Admiral Shyamal Fernando as the chairman while the secretary will be Air vice Marshal Elmo Perera.
