Defence Services win Senior National Hockey C’ships
Defence Services Hockey Association became champions at the Senior Men’s Hockey Nationals when they beat Matale Hockey Association 2-0 to clinch the hockey plum for the 16th successive year at the 55th Hockey Nationals played at Maliyadeva College grounds, Kurunegala. Defence Services led 1-0 at the breather.
The goal scorers for Defence Services were centre forward M.N. Mulaffer and left inside Shanaka Nadalochana.
M.J.M. Naushad and Anuruddha Herath Bandara umpired.
In the semi final Matale HA beat Kegalle Ha 2-0 and Defence Services beat Colombo HA 4-0.
Kegalle HA turned out to be giant killers of the championship when they for the first time in the history entered the semi finals before losing to the strong Matale HA 2-0.
But Kegalle HA had the satisfaction of winning the consolation finals by defeating the strong Colombo HA 3-2; a victory which proved beyond doubt hockey in Kegalle district is on the way up.
Minister for Environment Anura Priyadharshana Yapa was the Chief Guest at the opening ceremony while doing the honours at the closing ceremony was Samson de Silva of SS Shipping Lines.
This was also the first time that the Senior Hockey Nationals were played at Kurunegala during its 55year history.
