From cricket it is to rugby and the schools rugby season will kick off for several schools today, with two key matches being played in the hill capital. Receiving top billing will be the match between Kingswood College and St. Anthony’s College which will be played at Nittawela. The Antonians led by Prop Pandula Angamanna will try to avenge last year’s defeat over the Kingswoodians led by hooker Chamila Abeygunaratne.
Both schools will have new coaches to guide them. The Antonians will be coached by former St. Anthony’s College rugby captain and CH&FC scrum half Sanjay Amunugama who has returned to the country after a ten year stay in Dubai. He will be assisted by former Kandy SC captain and Sri Lanka centre three quarter Saman Kotalawala.
Kingswood College will be coached by that long standing Antonian coach Priyantha Gunaratne who has taken over the coaching from Nalaka Weerakkody. It must be recalled Priyantha Gunaratne coached the Antonians last year and made his exit towards the tail end of the season. One wonders whether this match is going to be a battle of attrition.
At the Trinity Rugby Stadium at Pallekele Trinity College will go all out to avenge their defeat at the hands of Science College, Mount Lavinia last. Trinity College will be led by Sri Lanka Schools centre and prolific scorer of tries last season Kanil Senaviratne. Trinity will be coached by Nilufer Ibrahim with Kiwi Neale Footo as the Technical Advisor. Science College will be coached by D.U.M. Jayatillake who inspired the lads from Mount Lavinia to perform with distinction last season. Jayatillake told the Daily Mirror that his ruggerites are from poor homes and they could hardly afford to have the supplementary diet and other vitamins required for strength building but they are a determined lot and will fight tooth and nail to the very end.
