Junior Chess Stars shine in Romania
Two Sri Lankans Vonara Goonetlleke (under 7) and Tharushi Nicklesha (under 9) won two gold medals in the 8th World Schools Chess Championship which was held in Romania. Meanwhile there were two silver and our bronze medalists for the Sri Lankan squad.
Vonara, a student of Ferguson BMV, Ratnapura, won the under 7 age group category which was played over five minute's duration. She was place fifth in the world rankings after her win at this championship. Tharushi a student o St. Joseph’s Convent Kegalle, won the under 9 category in the same format.
Nelunika Methmini (Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda) won the silver medal while Manisha Guneratne (Sirimavo Bandaranayake BMV) took the bronze medal behind Methmini in the under 15 Girls event. In the under 17 event Irindu Basnayake and Nuwanth Dilekha was able to grab the silver and bronze medals respectively.
P.R.R. Nonis (Ave Maria Convent) BInudhi Senarathyapa (Visakha Vidyalaya) took bronze medals in the under 13 and 11 respectively.
All countries affiliated to the world Governing body participated at the Championship.
