St. Thomas’ College, Matale trounced St. Anne’s College Kurunegala by 24 points (3 goals, 1 penalty) to 05 (1 try) in their schools division one segment ‘C’ under 20 rugby tournament match played at the Trinity Stadium, Pallekele yesterday. At half time St. Thomas’ College led 15-05.

The losers St. Anne’s College opened scoring early in the first half when prop forward Diran Huertley scored mid right and this went unconverted and the lead itself was short lived.

In two minutes the Thomians overtook them through a fine try by centre Shehan Wijetunga and full back Janajaya Bandara added the extra points.

Minutes before the short break the Thomians went further ahead through prop Daminda Ekanayake who scored after the forwards had done the spade work and Janajaya Bandara’s kick at goal was well on target.

Early in the second half Janajaya fired a 30 metre penalty for the Thomians to increase their lead to 17-5.

Mid way in this half the referee Mohamed Faizal awarded a penalty try to the Thomians

for obstruction but changed his decision after consulting touch judge S. Madugalle who informed the Thomians had earlier infringed when their scrum half Dayaratne had kicked the ball from an off side position. In the dying stages of the game the Thomians scored their third try when flanker Harsha Premaratne sliced through to touch down under the posts and Janajaya Bandara goaled it.
