Capt. Fernando and Billen win India Cup golf

Capt. Damindra Fernando and Marleen Billen won the men’s and women’s titles respectively at ‘India Cup’ Golf Tournament organized at Royal Golf Club, Colombo, last week.

Alex Lee finished as the runner up in the men’s tournament while Roshini Sangani finished second in the women’s tournament.

The other award winners of the tournament were Niloo Jayathilake (nearest to pin hole no.9); Stan Nell (nearest to the pin hole no. 13); Ranjan Rajendran (nearest to pin hole no. 16); Mahendra Jayasekera (longest drive hole no. 8) and Marleen Billen (5 hidden holes).

The event was organized by the Indo-lanka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ILCCI) in association with High Commission of India.

The event generated enthusiastic participation from members of ILCCI, with invitees also from ‘Club 41’. In a daylong event, 72 golfers including, 13 lady golfers competed for the trophy.

The daylong event culminated with a glittering awards ceremony organized at India House, which was hosted by Ashok K. Kantha, High Commissioner of India and Sharmila Kantha.

The ceremony was attended by over a hundred guests. Vish Govindasamy, President of ILCCI, announced the prize winners and the awards were presented by High Commissioner Kantha.

Speaking on the occasion, High Commissioner Kantha lauded the initiative of Vish Govindasamy to revive the tradition of ‘India Cup’ under the aegis of ILCCI, the last edition of which was held in 2006. He also appreciated the role of ILCCI in fostering close trade and economic relations between Sri Lanka and India.

Govindasamy, in his remarks, expressed his gratitude to various Indian and Sri Lankan companies for supporting the event and suggested that ‘India Cup’ Golf Tournament be made an annual event.

High Commissioner Kantha agreed and assured ILCCI of all support from the High Commission.
