Shafraz stuns 17 time winner Sirisoma
The second day’s proceedings of the 2nd President’s trophy Open Snooker tournament conducted by the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) played at the AAC billiards table saw club mates Abdul Sattar and S.H.M. Aslam of MSC recording their second successive win.
The wins also saw Sattar and Aslam emerging strong contenders for the title alongside defending champion Susantha Boteju (YMCA) and Ryan Somaratne (Otters AC).
Sattar cruised through to a comfortable three frames to one win over M.R.T. Chandana of YMBA while Aslam who on day one beat M.I. Farook of MICH by three frames to two, recorded an easy three frames to nil win over club mate M.J.M. Ifham.
However the biggest upset of the tournament was the defeat of experienced player and 17 times national billiards champion K.H. Sirisoma of SLPA who was beaten by young M.S.M, Shafraz of Rileys by three frames to two.
Naresh Samarawickrama of Galle CC another experienced cueist showed that he has not lost his touch. Naresh based in Germany playing in a local tournament after a lapse of seven years coasted to a convincing three frames to nil over S.R. Gunasekera of YMBA.
Naresh will now meet an up and coming young player in W.M. Naushad of The Cue who beat M.I.M. Rifai of MSC by three frames to one. Veteran S.M. Shaharwadie of MSC went down to Rommy Razack of MICH.
