The speed Championship Round II saw Ashan Silva who had the power from Motul Lubricants take the day’s honour winning three events. He won the hearts of all spectators and was cheered all the way for his stunning performances. Ashan first appearing in the SL-H Car up to 1600cc event got off to a good start and held on to it until the chequered flag. Though he got a better start he was pushed right through the race by experienced drivers in the caliber of Dinesh Jayawardene and Dilan Perera. One of the leading drivers in this class Pasindu Peiris failed to live up to expectations and finished in fifth position. With the drivers who are in peak form saw one of the best races in this category. Ashan competing in the SL-GT class up to 3500 cc was once again in

pole position and was off in a flash ahead of Sajaad Zuhair, Dinesh Deheragoda and champion driver in this class Pasindu Peiris. The race also saw the absence of another champion driver Aravinda Premadasa. However it was Ashan who was in front having a comfortable lead and he was assured of victory. The battle for the second and third positions was the most interesting with Dinesh and Pasindu engaged in a crucial fight. During this ongoing fight there were also a few mishaps for both drivers which caused some damages to their vehicle but they continued until the last few meters when Dinesh got past Pasindu near the finish line. The fight became hotter because all the drivers are looking for vital points for the 2012 championship title. The most looked forward race of the meet the single seater 1600 cc Formulas (pre 85 and post 85) saw all veterans in the Formula class Rohan de Silva, Dinesh Jayawardeneand Shirendra Lawrence at the start line with Ashan holding pole position.

Ashan went ahead from the start and kept on moving steadily to extend his lead while the others figured in a strong battle to close on the leader. It was Rohan de Silva and Rikaz Khalid who finished the race behind the race leader Ashan. The driver expected to give a good chase Dinesh Jayawardene could not finish the race due to technical difficulties that arose during the event and the second and third places were shared by Rikaz Khalid and Rohan de Silva.

In the same category Kaushal Samarasinghe won the event followed by Viren Boteju and Emdad Hussain. Up and coming Rumesh Rajakulendran won the Formula McLarens 1300cc class ahead of Tharindu Gamage who recorded two wins in the previous competitions and held the top spot. Uvaim M. Raeez and Chandima Guneratne were placed runners up in race one.

The SL-H 1500cc category saw one of the oldest competitors Sumanapala Mannapperuma in battle with young blooded drivers and he came up with flying colors to be placed second behind Sajaad Zuhair to reach the podium.

Parameshwaran took the honors by winning the event with ease. It was also highly notable to see one of the youngest driver’s 14-year-old Damith Weerasinghe drove to glory winning the SL-N Car up to 1000cc where he faced competition from experienced drivers.

Praveen Madugalle, the leader in the recently introduced McLarens Alto K10 class displayed his capabilities to the maximum taking full control of the lead to win in a comfortable manner and hold onto his lead for a further term. Susantha Gunewardene drove his Ford Laser 1300 to victory. He took advantage of his pole position and was off to a flyer and made no mistakes until he received the flag at the finish.

In the two-wheeler class it was the Gunewardena brothers Jaden and Aaron who stole the thunder with their dare devil riding abilities thrilling the crowds to the maximum. Aaron, the youngest at 8 got past his elder brother to make a clean sweep in the 125cc class 4 strokes riding a Yamaha, while Jaden had to be content with second spot. Marlon Manchanayake was the race leader for almost half of the race but the two brothers giving chase from the start managed to overpower the leader and were place first and second.

The Super Motard up to 450cc winner was won by Ned Daniel who had to fight all the way for his victory as all the leading riders were seen in action. He faced his biggest challenge from Suraj Perera and Udika Lakmal Malavige before winning the event. The Super Motard 250cc class winner was Udika Srimal Malavige. He was challenged by Sarath Kumarasinghe and Ushan Perera.

Good day of racing was marred by actions of a few who got Physical and also verbally threatened fellow competitors. This was witnessed by all chief officials. Immediate action should be taken to punish who ever is at fault and an action plan to eliminate such horrendous behaviour. Up to you Mr. Minister.
