Isipathana In easy 50-17 win over Science College
Isipathana coasted to their fourth win of the Singer Under 20 Division 1A league rugby tournament with an easy 50-17 win over Science College in their Singer Division 1A rugby encounter played at Longdon Place yesterday.
Isipathana, having taken a comfortable 24-7 lead at the breather, made up their total points through five goals and three tries against a goal and two tries by Science College.
Even though Science College made the first scoring play with the game just four minutes old through a try by centre Kanchana Lakshitha, which was converted by fly half Chatura Gomes, they found it tough to handle the Isipathana power.
Isipathana made their first score four minutes later with centre Shenal Dias going over giving second centre Hirantha Perera an easy conversion. Isipathana increased their lead five minutes later when scrum half Sudam Suriyaarachchi intercepted a pass and sprinted down to touch down the left corner flag.
In the 18th minute Isipathana’s No 8 Arun Kumara barged his way to score under the post with Hirantha adding the extra points. It took another 17 minutes for the next scoring to be done which too was by Isipathana with wing three Udara Prematileke going over for an unconverted try to give his team a 24-7 lead at the breather. The resumption saw Isipathana going into action and succeeding in the third minute of this session with flanker Shenal Dileeka posting a try and Hirantha doing the finishing touches. It seemed that the Pathana boys were going to make mince meat of their hapless opponents when replacement centre Pabasara Madawa Hewage went over for his side’s sixth try which was under the posts with an easy kick being fluffed.
The unconverted try saw the Isipathanians in a commanding lead of 36-7. But Science struck back through an unconverted try by winger Thusitha Gomes to decrease the lead.
Even then Isipathana dealt a double blow when they scored two tries within a space of ten minutes with the first by Hirantha Perera and the other by prop forward Hasitha Premaratne with Ashan de Costa making no mistake with the conversions.
In a do or die battle Science College succeeded in the dying stages of the game to breach the Isipathana defence with scrum half Lasindu Ishan going over for a consolation try but it was insufficient to prevent Isipathana to romp home easy winners.
