Trinity favourites against Kingswood

Trinity College should go out favourites but Kingswood College will be no easy meat when these two schools clash in their schools Singer Shield under 19 Division one Segment A rugby tournament match to be played at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy today, with the kick off scheduled for 4.30 pm.

This is the oldest fixture in the schools circuit dating back to the year 1906 but not many matches have been played between the schools due to many reasons and one of them being Kingswood College giving up rugby a few years later following the death of one of their players, revived sixty years later. But still for many other reasons regular fixtures were not possible till recently.

Trinity College led by centre Kaneel Senaviratne have won five matches and lost one match to the Peterites and lie third in the table. A win in this match will boost their morale for their all important first leg of the Bradby Shield encounter to be played in Colombo.

The Kingswoodians on the other hand started off well winning their opening match against St. Anthony’s College but hit a bad patch losing their next five matches in a row. They came close to beating Royal College and were just three points behind when time stalled them after one of the finest fight backs seen this season. The Kingswoodians will be led by prop Chamila Abeygunaratne.

While a Vidyarthian Priyantha Gunaratne will be the coach of Kingswood by a strange quirk of fate a Kingswoodian Nilfer Ibrahim is the coach of Trinity College. This match should produce exhilarating rugby and the games’ fans are bound to relish it.
