Kumara and Abeywardena come out on top

The five day ABA Novices Boxing Championship which concluded at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium saw M.G.L.S. Kumara of Air Force and T.L.D.M. Abeywardena of MAS Thurulie Thulhiriya being adjudged the best boxers in the men and women’s categories.

The best loser’s award in the men’s and women’s category were K.M.C.E. Bandara and W.H.M. Herath – both from the Army.

The novices’ championship this year also saw a keen interest being taken by the clubs around the island with over 190 pugilists from both categories from over 30 clubs participating.

This according to the officials of the ABA this was the highest ever participation in the history of the championship. The men’s category was dominated by Army while pugilists from MAS Holdings (Thurulie, Linea Pallekele, Unichela) dominated the girl’s category.

Army recorded four wins in the men’s category from ten bouts with Slimline BC winning three while Thurulie BC won two and one each by Linea BC and Unichela winning four of the six bouts that were conducted.

Men’s – Light Flyweight Under 49kgs – M.G.L.S. Kumara (Army) beat M.M. Prabaswara (Slimline BC). – K.M.D. Jayaranga (Army) beat A.S.V. Wickramage (Linea BC).

R.D.I.N. Jayawansa (Army) beat K.W.A.D. Wickramanayake (Silueta BC). Lightweight Under 60kgs – V.D.D.D. Saparamadu (Slimline BC) beat K.M.C. Bandara (Army).

R.N. Weththasinghe (Slimline BC) beat K.T. Ramesh (Army). weight Under 64kgs – S. Navaratne (Slimline BC) beat S.B. Kooralagedera (Army). Middleweight Under 75kgs – I.B.N.S. Bandara (Army) beat H.A.W. Kumara (Air Force). Light Heavyweight Under 81kgs – D.L. Prasanna (Navy) beat K.H.S. Priyakkara (Air Force). Heavyweight Under 91kgs – A.R.B.E. Tilekeratne (Army) beat W.P. Weththasinghe (Army).

G.A.N. Perera (Army) beat S. Kumaran (Police). Women’s – Light Flyweight Under 48kgs W.D.D.M. Amarasinghe (Linea BC) beat W.H.M. Herath (Army).
