The Gunners Super Cross organized by Sri Lanka Army Artillery Regiment concluded on Sunday at the Minneriya Circuit with Aravinda Premadasa and Upulwan Serasinghe taking the major honors in the car events. Aravinda Premadasa who has been dominating the SL-GT 3500cc Class for many years came onto the track after a lay off showed that he is still the champion driver in this event winning race one and two

comfortably to carry away the Best Drivers Trophy on offer. The leader in this class for the CEAT –SLARDAR Championship Dinesh Deheragoda though placed second and third respectively in both events managed to hold on to his leadership in the standings. Upulwan Serasinghe the driver with a high reputation for the Ford Laser/Mazda events made a clean sweep winning three events. First he went on to win the 1300cc Ford Laser/Mazda class followed by young Kushan Peiris and continued his good form to win the 1500cc event ahead of  another veteran in this category Chaminda Weerasooriya to make the double.

The inform driver Serasinghe entered the Ford Laser/Mazda upto 1500cc Classic event which was introduced for the first time with the top ten drivers with the best time in the previous  Ford Laser/Mazda 1300 and 1500cc class in action. Serasinghe who won the two previous races was in pole position and was off in a flash and maintained the lead until the end to take his tally of wins to three.

The SL-H 1600cc Cars event which is a championship race saw Pasindu Peiris who was holding the pole position taking full advantage of it to push Ashan Silva to second slot and take maximum points for his championship race. Pasindu failed to maintain the momentum he gained in the first race and was beaten by Ashan Silva. Sanjaya Sedara  Senerath too came up with a fine performance to win the Subaru Legacy 2000cc class and the Trucks and Jeeps Open events. Ajith Keerthi won the Mini 7 1000cc class without much difficulty.

Damith Sanjaya Weerasinghe and Dinesh Senanayake were the other two drivers to record wins competing in SL-N Cars up to 1000cc and SL-S Special Cars up to 1500cc respectively.

Indian riders C.S. Santosh. Harith Noah and Adnan Mohamed dominated the major Motor cycle championship events. They had no difficulty in winning these events as the local heroes were not present to pose a threat to them. The local riders who entered these races were never in close touch with the Indians at any stage of the race. Santosh was declared the Best Rider of the Gunners Super Cross 2012 for his two wins and carried away the trophy.

Mithun Jayasanka Sigera rode well to grab two victories in the MX Motor Cross Bikes upto 125cc, while P.N. Nihal Wijeratne won the X STD Street Trail Bikes event and Prabath Senadhipathy managed to win the M STD/ MOD 250cc category.

The non appearance of the local riders was a disappointment for the large crowd. The organizers and the conductors of these events should great care in keeping the riders in action by discussing their problems in a cordial manner. It is the duty of all to sort out maters and to continue racing with the participation of riders. If this is done the sport will get the boost it has gained through the years and will prosper further.

A failure to come to a compromise will not only damage the reputation of motor sports to a greater extent, and also deprive the racing fans of witnessing thrills and spills they expect through motor cycle racing.
