Panagoda,abeywardena emerge best boxers

The ABA conducted Men’s and Women’s Intermediate Boxing Championships which concluded at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium recently saw Army dominating by winning five gold and silver medals followed by MAS Linea BC with three golds and two silver medals.

Army fielded the most number of pugilists in both the categories accounting 63 while MAS Linea BC achieved their medals having fielded 15 boxers. The other clubs to impress were Navy who won two gold and silver medals with Air Force winning one gold and five silver medals and Air Force Kafir one gold medal. The biggest surprise was national champions Slimline BC who was able get only one gold and a silver.

Schoolboy B.G.R.I. Warnasooriya of Vidyartha Kandy pulled off the biggest upset when he outfoxed P.G.E. Madushan of Air Force with ease in the lightweight under 49kgs bout.

Meanwhile P.P.D. Panagoda of Army and Dilhara Abeywardena of MAS Thurulie BC were adjudged the best boxers in the men’s and women’s categories while L.M. Suduwelikanda of Kotalawala Defence Academy BC and W.N.D Fernando of Army were adjudged the best losers. Red). Lightweight Under 60kgs – P.P.D. Panagoda (Army Red) beat L.M.
