Trials to select riders for SA Games
The Interim Committee for Cycling in Sri Lanka has made arrangements to conduct a trial to select men and women cyclists for the forthcoming South Asian Games to be held in New Delhi, India next February. The trial which was to be held in Colombo earlier has now been shifted to Udawalawe. Though 30 cyclists are already in the men’s pool some of the leading cyclists Dave Nugera, Janaka Hemantha Kumara, C.P. Meemanage and Suwaris Premachandra who failed to enter the pool will get an opportunity to prove themselves at this trial.
The Interim Committee hopes to send a team comprising ten riders for the Games. Meanwhile Sri Lanka’s ace rider B.J. Sumansekera has been appointed as the captain for the cycling team. The trial will be of 40 kilometers. At present the Cycling Federation is minus a National coach and the Interim Committee has received the names of three coaches Upali Ratnayake, Gamini Sarath and Tudor Wijesuriya and soon they will select one of these coaches to take charge of the team. According to reliable sources the Interim Committee is considering to get the services of a Korean coach before the South Asian Games.
