Hat-trick by skipper Gurung; Nepal thrashes Maldives 5-0
Nepal’s women soccerites for the second time came up with another top class performance to beat Maldives by five goals to nil in a Group ‘B’ match of the South Asian Women’s Football Championships. Most impressive was Nepal’s skipper Jamuna Gurung who had a hat-trick of goals. Her achievement on Monday was a landmark for her as this was her fourth hat-trick in international football for Nepal.
Yesterday she opened scoring for her team in the 20th minute and it was followed by the second goal coming from Anu Lama just 11 minutes later, and the teams returned for lemons with Nepal in front 2-0.
In the second session of play the Maldivians had no answer other than to defend their goal area. Nepal on their part played well to penetrate the defense line twice and increased their tally to four. The third and fourth goals came from the boot of Gurung in the 70th and 89th minutes and the final minute saw the Nepalese receive a penalty which the skipper herself took and made no mistake with it.
Nepal in their earlier game thrashed Pakistan 8-0 and hold top position in Group ’B’ with a tally of 13 goals which looks good for them and are already assured of getting a berth in the semifinals.
