Ravindu Tillakaratne’s four wickets and Rashmika Opatha’s swashbuckling 85 not out set up a 10 wicket win for S.Thomas’ College in their first match of the All Island One Day Championship.
Winning the toss Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala opted to bat first but things became sour as Hansaka Liyanarachchi ripped through the top order having the visitors reeling at 21 for 3, while missing a hat-trick after picking up Dulaj Ranathunga and Kavin Bandara off consecutive balls.
Thomian 2nd XI captain Ishen Perera then got into the act as he made up for his 8 wides in three overs, to dismiss Damith Silva (5) and Damith Perera (7). There was no respite for Maliyadeva with the introduction of Ravindu Tillakaratne as he bamboozled the rest of the batting lineup picking up 4 for 19 as the visitors folded for 109 with extras being the highest run getter alongside Sanjaya Wanninayka’s 19.
Thomians took around an hour to reach the target, with Rashmika Opatha going on a demolition derby. Opatha scored 85 in 42 balls which 9 fours and 6 sixes. 72 of his runs were off boundaries.
Kavind Bandara and Sehan Premarathne felt the brunt of the Opatha onslaught as they went for 31 and 24 respectively in their three overs.
