Lyceum pip Gateway to claim eighth title

Lyceum International School Wattala retained the Inter-International Schools Athletics Championships by two points, winning it for the eighth time, after a close a tussle with Gateway College Colombo on the final day of the three-day competition at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Diyagama yesterday.

Lyceum, the defending champions, who have been the dominant force in inter-international school athletics collected 981 points while Gateway, who have made steady progress in athletics over the years, had 979 points. In third place was Lyceum International School Panadura with 504 points.

The much-looked forward event saw some excellent performances with athletes establishing 17 new meet records during the three-day competition which came to a conclusion with colourful closing ceremony.

Shehan Wisanperuma of Lyceum International School, Wattala was named best male athlete while Poornima Gunarathne of Leeds International School, Panadura was named best female athlete. Wisanperuma was in fine form as he won the boys U-19 long jump title clearing a distance of 6.88 metres while Gunarathne won the high jump girls U-19 title clearing a height of 1.68 metres.

A total of 1800 athletes from 24 international schools competed.
