The Sri Lankan girls came out on top at the Asia/Oceania World Junior qualifiers tournament when they defeated the top seeded Philippines by two sets to one in the finals played at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, Colombo today.
In the first of the three matches played (two singles, one doubles) Anjalika Kurera having conceded the first set 4/6 to Isabela Carlos Ma came back with vengeance to win the second and third sets 7/5 6/2 to give the host a winning start.
This followed with Anika Seneviratne disposing off the unbeaten Alexandra Vitaliano 6/2 6/1 which ensured a first place for Sri Lanka.
The doubles match was of academic which the Philippines won 2-0.
The Sri Lankan boys were not that fortunate as they were beaten by Kazakhstan with Dimitry Bezborodov and Nikita Sidorov recording wins over Ashen Silva and Nelaka Dissanayake, 6/0 6/2 and 6/7 (6) 7/5 6/4 respectively, while the doubles was called off.
The girls will now play in Thailand in the next stage from April 25.
