Defending champions Isipathana College will face an acid test when they take on St. Joseph’s College in their Singer Schools Under-20 ‘A’ Division League Rugby Tournament match at Longden Place on Monday (6).

The Josephians have already given a good account of their potential and have also signalled a warning to the rest of their opponents by stretching a powerful Royal College outfit to the maximum in their opening fixture of the tournament last week.

Despite going down fighting 22-28 at the Royal Sports Complex, the Joes were able to leave a lasting impression as they had the distinction of scoring more tries than their opponents.

As a result, Isipathana will be quite aware of their opponents’ capabilities and they will need to come out with a really good all-round performance if they are to pull off their second successive victory in the tournament.

Last week of course Isipathana managed to bring down a spirited Dharmaraja College team 18-12 in their opening match of the tournament played at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy.

But this time Isipathana are certain to receive tough opposition as the Josephians will be quite determined to register their first win of the tournament.

Overall, St. Joseph’s will be looking for an improved performance from their place kicker Chatura Seneviratne who missed out some valuable points for his team last week.

He was successful in converting just a solitary try and that certainly cost St. Joseph’s a lot in the end as they were beaten by a margin of six points.

Isipathana also will be looking for an improved performance in their second outing as most of the players looked scrappy last week as they struggled to beat the Rajans under soggy ground conditions.

In fact, they were trailing 3-7 at half time and managed to turn the game in their favour with three tries in the second half.
