Prodigy’s Olympic dream dashed by ignorant officials
Sri Lanka’s badminton whiz-kid Achini Ratnasiri is the country’s undisputed number one women’s player but Sri Lanka’s badminton officials have put a spoke in the wheel of her ambitions to secure an Olympic Games slot, cleverly disguising their vile attempts behind “national interest”, sources told “Daily Mirror”.
The 17-year old schoolgirl who has won the national singles crown for three consecutive years is Sri Lanka’s obvious best-bet for future or present inter national glory, but Badminton officials have not only stopped her from returning to an inter national tour nament where she won a gold medal last year but have issued her a letter demanding explanation why disciplinary action should not be taken against her for skipping a national assignment.
Ratnasiri has taken a realistic view of her chances and refused to take part in a useless Uber Cup qualifying tournament as it is obvious that Sri Lanka would not stand the remotest chance of securing a qualifying berth.
Only three teams would qualify from Asia for the main Uber Cup and Korea have already secured one slot as defending champs, with China also securing a slot as hosts of the tournament. Therefore only one slot will be open and countries like Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, India, Indonesia would also be taking part in the qualifying tournament to be played in Macau in two weeks.
It takes no expert to understand that Sri Lanka will not stand even a semblance of a chance to qualify and Ratnasiri did not wish to waste her energy chasing a mirage. Instead she decided to pursue a more realistic dream – the dream of every sportsman on this earth – to qualify for the Olympics.
Grade III inter national tour naments may not be the most competitive on earth but they offer the best opportunity for players of Sri Lankan standard to gain ranking points required to qualify for Olympics as Niluka Karunaratne recently proved by winning three tournament in a row.
Ratnasiri won a gold medal last year at the Iran Open and entered the quarter finals, so she knew she stood a great chance of gaining some valuable ranking points if she takes part in it this year as well. She also desired to take part in the Uganda Open in order to gain more points.
However Badminton officials not only denied her the opportunity of taking part in those tour naments but also decided to take “disciplinary action” for opting out of Uber Cup qualifiers which they term “national duty”.
However, other Badminton sources said this is nothing more than a sinister ploy to block Ratnasiri from gaining ranking points so the officials could pave the way for another player who has become a “darling” of some powerful men in recent times to make a free trip to the London Olympics this year.
“Just consider who’s in the Badminton Association office now. Just find out how many of them have played badminton at least at national level. They don’t know a shuttlecock from a racquet. So what more than this can you expect for a top class player from an ignorant bunch like that ?” asked one source who contacted “Daily Mirror”.
Apart from winning a doubles gold medal with Upuli Samanthika at the Iran Open, Ratnasiri also won the singles and doubles titles at the Bangladesh Open and won a bronze medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Isle of Man last year, proving her abundant talents which brought her three straight national crowns both in singles and doubles in the past three years after she first became National championship runner up at the tender age of 13. Ratnasiri qualified for the World Championships in England last year and won her first round doubles match ear ning herself 3,000 points which is interestingly higher than the points that a winner of a Grade III tournament would earn.
Sources said the youngster is heart broken and distraught at the cruel treatment meted out to her by the vicious world of the adults and is even contemplating giving up. Sri Lanka is on threshold of losing a sporting prodigy of unparalleled stature in recent times thanks to the idiocy of shallow minded officialdom.

Multi-Million rupee badminton racket
Former National Badminton champion L.R. Ariyananda who is now an official fighting for a cleaner sport says the mystery of the missing audited accounts of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association for the year 2010 could open the lid on a multi-million Rupee racket of corrupt officials exploiting innocent youth players.
However his repeated pleas to the Sports Minister to investigate the matter has mysteriously fallen on deaf ears paving way for the culprits with powerful political connections to go scot free.
Ariyananda who is now the President of the Western province Badminton Association has raised the question about the annual accounts when the Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA) was held on July 8 this year.
Sports Ministry Assistant Director Abeysinghe who chaired the AGM agreed to the point as elections could not be held without previous year’s accounts according to the Sports Law. Abeysinghe had ordered the officials who were elected to present the accounts within a month of assuming office.
At a meeting the Sports Minister had been informed by the SLBA Affiliates that the audit of the SLBA had been done by the same firm which did their accounts and the Minister ordered a fresh audit.
However, the accounts are missing todate and Ariyananda points out those discrepancies in accounts run into millions making it no small
matter.
SLBA had collected money running into several millions from schoolchildren for various tours, contravening Education Ministry rules and accounts for none of the tours have been made available by officials.
The Schools Badminton Association is getting ready to embark on another tour with a massive contingent in December to Singapore, collecting Rs. 95,000 from students.
“No one cares to investigate this racket because powerful officials with political connections are involved. They collect huge amounts of money as they please and never account for them. By turning a blind eye, officials are encouraging these acts. SLBA has now actually turned into a den of thieves than a sports body” said Ariyananda.
