Mahela Jayawardane whipped unbeaten 96 in 50 balls to steer Wayamba United to a comfortable 56 runs victory against Nagenahira Nagas in the SLPL match played at Pallekale International Cricket Stadium on Monday. This is the fourth win for Wayamba United in four matches and they have virtually booked their place in the semi finals with two matches to be played.
Chasing a difficult target of 191, Nagenahira Nagas were dismissed for 134 in 19.5 overs as teenager, Akila Dhananjaya claiming 3 for 18 in his four overs. Angelo Perera scored unbeaten 48 in 39 balls for Nagenahira Nagas but he was at a lone battle in the middle after five of their top order batsmen were back in the pavilion for 66 runs in 10 overs.
Batting first, Sri Lanka skipper, Mahela Jayawardane hit a swashbuckling 96 off mere 50 balls, including 11 fours and 5 sixes. He added 66 runs for the second wicket with Tamim Iqbal who made 32 off 30 balls.
In contrast to the previous game between Ruhuna Royals and Kandurata Warriors, played on the same surface where 20 wickets fell within 38 overs, runs flow like floods as Jayawardane sent the ball racing to all corners of the ground.
Ajantha Mendis claimed two for 29.
