Jacob Oram rose to the occasion to guide Uva Next to the finals of the inaugural SLPL, with a 20 runs win over Wayamba United in the first semi-final played at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, on Tuesday, August 28.
Chasing 172, Azhar Mahmood and Isuru Udana fought gallantly adding 120 runs for the eighth wicket in 80 balls before closing the shop at 151 for eight.
Oram claimed 3 for 16 in his four over as Wayamba slumped to 5 for 23 in 4.4 overs. Umar Gul took control of the situation from there in to dismiss Kaushalya Weeraratne and Milinda Siriwardane as Wayamba was struggling at 27 for 7 in six overs. The result was a forgone conclusion, with 14 overs to go but Azhar Mahmood and Isuru Udana thought otherwise.
Batting first, Dilshan Munaweera and Thilina Kandambi hit 46 in 36 balls after Bhanuka Rajapaksa was dismissed for 4 runs in the first over. Munaweera scored 23 in 17 balls; hitting five boundaries while Thilina Kandambi scoring 29 in similar number of balls. Both these batsman were sent back to the pavilion by Abdur Razzaq.
Big made Jecob Oram plundered 41 in 17 balls, including five sixes and a boundary to lift Uva from 89 for 5 to 145 before offering a simple catch to Azhar Mohammed at backward point.
In the meantime, Chanderpaul was carefully crafting his runs and opened out his shoulders in the last two overs to lift Uva from 145 to 171, which proved too much for Wayamba at the end.
