Sangakkara regains top spot among test batsmen

Former Sri Lanka skipper, Kumar Sangakkara, returned to the top of the test batting rankings as South Africa’s Jacques Kallis found himself slipping down after the first test against Australia, concluded at Cape Town this week.

Kallis, who entered the match leading Sangakkara by three ratings points, has now slipped seven ratings points behind him after scores of nought and two not out. For Kallis to regain top spot, he will now need to put up a solid performance in the second Test.

No other Sri Lankan could find a place among the top ten batsmen as they have failed miserably in the recently concluded test series against Pakistan, where Sangakkara scored 516 runs in three matches with a match saving double century at Abu Dhabi.

Top ten test batsmen according to the latest Reliance ICC Test Rankings (after the first Test between South Africa and Australia)

Sri Lanka needs minimum 4-1 win to retain second place

Second-ranked Sri Lanka, presently sitting on 119 ratings points has to beat Pakistan by a 4-1 margin or better in the forthcoming five-match ODI series to avert a drop down in the ODI championship table. Sri Lanka currently enjoys 119 rating points, just one ahead of world champion's India, while Pakistan is ranked sixth with 101 points.

The five-match ODI series starts at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on Friday.

A 5-0 win for Sri Lanka will lift the island nation to 123 ratings points while a 4-1 win will earn it two rankings points. These are the only two scenarios where there will be no changes to the championship table. Anything less for Lankans means that they drop down in the ODI championship table.

A 3-2 series win will put Sri Lanka alongside India on 118 ratings points but when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point, India will be ranked second while Sri Lanka will fall to third position.

In contrast, if Pakistan wins the series 4-1 that will drop Sri Lanka to fourth position on 112 ratings points. A 5-0 whitewash means Sri Lanka will slip down to sixth position on 109 ratings points.

Ranked seventh in the ODI batsmen, Kumar Sangakkara is the highest-ranked batsman from both sides. Provided the former Sri Lanka captain manages to display the same form he showed in the Test series he has a very good chance of moving as high as fifth in the batting rankings.

Sri Lanka skipper Tillekeratne Dilshan (11th) and Mahela Jayawardene (15th) are among the top 20 batsmen while Angelo Mathews is ranked at 35th slot.

Lasith Malinga, ranked 8th adds weight to the Sri Lankan bowling attack as Suraj Randiv is the only other Sri Lankan bowler in the top 50.

Series schedule:

11 Nov – First ODI (d/n), Dubai International Cricket Stadium

14 Nov – Second ODI (d/n), Dubai International Cricket Stadium

18 Nov – Third ODI (d/n), Dubai International Cricket Stadium

20 Nov – Fourth ODI (d/n), Sharjah Cricket Stadium

23 Nov – Fifth ODI (d/n), Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi

Sri Lanka maintains second place

Sri Lanka maintained its second position in the ODI rankings despite their 2-3 drubbing by Australia in the five match ODI series, concluded on Monday.

Top-ranked Australia enjoys a comfortable 11-ratings-point lead over second-placed Sri Lanka. Australia’s 3-2 series win has restricted Sri Lanka to earn only one ratings point which, in turn, has given India a chance to reclaim second position.

However, to achieve the number-two position, India will have to beat England by 4-1 or better in the five-match series which starts at Chester-le-Street on 3 September.

Clarke, Johnson lead batting & bowling averages

Aussie skipper Michael Clark has been dismissed only once in three matches as he enjoys a staggering batting average of 157.00 after three One Day Internationals on their current tour of Sri Lanka. His contribution has done wonders to the team as the tourists have taken 2-1 lead in the five match ODI series already.

Left arm pacie Mitchell Johnson lead the bowling averages with 10 wickets to his credit in three matches. Johnson is the only bowler from both sides who has an economy rate less than 4 runs per over.

Upul Tharanga's fourth ODI century of the year, on Tuesday, pushed him to the top spot among Sri Lankan batters after three games. Lasith Malinga lead bowling average for Sri Lanka with six wickets in two matches.

Inventor Dilshan and record setting Mendis lead averages

Tillakaratne Dilshan and Ajantha Mendis lead batting and bowling averages of T20 series between Sri Lanka and Australia, at Pallekale.

Dilshan, the inventor of famous 'Dill Scoop' scored a swashbuckling 104 not out in the first match and Ajantha Mendis mesmerized the Aussies with stunning figures of six for 16 in the second match. Incidentally, Mendis's figures is the best ever by a bowler in a T20 international. Dilshan's unbeaten 104 is the third best individual score in the history of T20 internationals and there are only five centurions in this version of cricket.

Sri Lanka within reach of the ODI summit

Sri Lanka will go top of the Reliance ICC ODI Championship table for the first time in its proud history if it beats Australia by 4-1 or better in the five-match ODI series which begins at Pallekele International Stadium from Wednesday.

Four-time world champion Australia, which has been holding the top spot since September 2009, currently sits on 130 ratings points and leads second-placed Sri Lanka by 12 ratings points. However, Sri Lanka will take a lead of one ratings point if it wins the series 4-1 while it will move eight points clear of Australia if it wins all the five matches of the series.

A 4-1 series win will put Sri Lanka on 125 ratings points, relegating Australia to 124 ratings points while a 5-0 win will earn Sri Lanka 11 ratings points which will put it on 129 ratings points while dropping Australia to 121 which will concede nine ratings points for its failure to win a single match.

On the other side of the coin, Sri Lanka will drop behind South Africa into fourth position if Australia wins by 4-1 or better.

While a 4-1 series win will lift Michael Clarke’s side to 133 ratings points, Tillakaratne Dilshan’s side will slip to 115 ratings points – one behind South Africa – whereas a 5-0 win for Australia will put it on 136 ratings points as compared to Sri Lanka’s 112.

One can click on <http://icc-cricket.yahoo.net/match_zone/odi_predictor.php> to find out exactly how the Sri Lanka and Australia series will affect the team rankings. Unlike the Test Championship table, the ODI Championship table is updated after every match.

Meanwhile in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen, Australia’s Shane Watson is the highest-ranked batsman from either side in third position – 46 points behind South Africa captain AD de Villiers.

Kumar Sangakkara, Michael Hussey and rival captains Dilshan and Clarke are the other batsmen inside the top 10 while former captain Ricky Ponting occupies 13th position.

Mitchell Johnson (seventh), Brett Lee (16th) and Nuwan Kulasekara (20th) are the bowlers who figure inside the top 20 in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers while Watson holds the top spot in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI all-rounders.
